Pathology

Pathology is the study of disease processes and their effects on tissues and organs.

In pain medicine, pathology helps identify the structural or cellular basis of pain — whether it arises from inflammation, degeneration, trauma or cancer. Understanding the underlying pathology is essential for choosing the right treatment, from targeted medications to surgical or interventional procedures. Sometimes, however, chronic pain persists even after the primary pathology has healed, highlighting the complexity of pain mechanisms.
