Outcome measures

Outcome measures are standardized tools used to evaluate the effectiveness of pain treatments.

They may assess pain intensity, physical function, psychological well-being, or quality of life. Common tools include the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), where patients rate their pain from 0 (no pain) to 10 (worst pain imaginable); the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), which uses a 10 cm line to mark pain intensity; the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) for spinal function; and the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) for multidimensional assessment.
Using validated outcome measures is essential in both clinical practice and research to ensure objective evaluation of therapies. They allow physicians to track progress, compare treatment approaches, and tailor care to the individual patient’s needs.
