Ischemic pain

Ischemic pain arises when tissues do not receive enough blood flow and oxygen.

It is commonly seen in peripheral artery disease, angina or after prolonged muscle compression. Patients may describe it as cramping, burning or squeezing. On a cellular level, ischemia leads to accumulation of metabolites and activation of nociceptors. Treatment often requires restoring circulation, but pain control can also be supported through nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulation or PRF in selected cases.
