Acute Pain

Acute pain is the type of pain that comes on suddenly, often after an injury, surgery, or inflammation. It acts as the body’s alarm system: nerves in the affected tissue (nociceptors) detect damage or irritation and send signals to the brain through specialized pain fibers (A-delta and C fibers).

This kind of pain is usually sharp, well-localized, and short-lived. It often improves as the body heals, typically within days to weeks. Alongside the pain, the body may also react with physical stress responses like faster heartbeat, higher blood pressure or muscle tension.

In other words, acute pain has a clear purpose — it warns you to protect the injured area and to allow recovery. Unlike chronic pain, which can persist without ongoing tissue damage, acute pain generally fades once healing takes place.
